Nigeria Police condemn in all its entity every element of torture in the conduct of police operations in this country - IGP

 

 

Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has reacted to the report by Amnesty International, which accused a special Nigerian police unit set up to combat crimes, of torturing detainees in its custody as a means of extracting confessions and lucrative bribes. (Read here)

In an interview with Al Jazeera, IGP Ibrahim Idris denied all the allegations. "Nigeria Police Force condemn in all its entity every element of torture in the conduct of police operations in this country." he said. "And we have units on the ground to check some of these excesses."

“I can ensure you is that in the Nigeria Police Force, we have all units. Every unit have codes of conduct, which is distributed among the officers. And we have the units that check the excesses of our officers. I can assure you that the Nigeria Police Force has never ever been involved in any element of torture in all its activities in the cause of their investigation all over the country.”

On what is being done to investigate the allegations and bring the people involved to account, he said: "In reality, some of the allegations by the Amnesty International highlighted in their report, we investigated them thoroughly and came to a very definite conclusion that some of these allegations are false."
